THE "WONDER FIVE" MARION HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL TEAM TRADE CARD ADVERTISING MARION, INDIANA (U.S.A.)
1921-1922
Records show that Marion High School of Marion, Indiana had a highly competitive boys basketball team as early as 1906. The "Wonder Five" was a moniker given to the famous Franklin, Indiana High School team during the early 1920s, a completely different team and school than this photograph. Marion is about 100 miles north of Franklin. The Franklin Wonder Five were very popular in the region, winning the Indiana State Basketball Championship for three consecutive years: 1920-1922. My best guess is that regional schools around Indianapolis either referred to their season as the "Wonder Five" season or simply pilfered the name as their own to seize on the popularity of the title.
