BREAD FOR HEALTH BASKETBALL CARDS (U.S.A.)
The Bread for Health cards were essentially used as a packaging seal at the end of loaves of bread and were released during the basketball season of 1950 by the National Baking Company. The cards were issued regionally, with confirmed distribution in the Mid-Atlantic Tri-State area and Michigan, but there is no definitive list of issuance. There was a total of 32 cards in the set, 9 of which are Hall of famers. This was the first set of basketball cards issued after the formation of the NBA in 1949.
The George Mikan is one of his most iconic cards. It uses the same classic image as his 1948 Bowman rookie card. The Bread for Health cards are extremely rare and hard to find in decent condition. The set was soon followed by an even rarer issue, Bread for Energy, a multi-sport set that included 4 basketball players, including another (and rarer) George Mikan card.
